How wise/unwise would it be for a 16 year old highschooler to get a *bone stock* 1996 Acura Integra LS 2-door with a 5-speed manual for $2k with 125k miles

You could do worse. It’s probably not that fast but it should be at least a little fun, and should be somewhat reliable and good on gas.

The bigger question is if it’s been modded? If it’s bone stock I’d say it’s a good deal.

My first car was a ‘92 Acura Integra with 100k miles on it. I paid around $3k for it. The front seats folded down flat which was nice.

They eat motor mounts but are otherwise low maintenance. Make sure the timing belt was done. I managed not to make any kids in mine and only crashed it once trying to make curfew.

My neighborhood is pretty safe so I’d doubt it, either way it'd  be parked in front of my parents' cars so it'd be impossible to get it out unless you fuck it up badly

Any running car in decent condition ids worth that, especially a 4-cylinder Honda

And since you seem to be in Florida from another comment on your post, you don’t have to worry about rust

Also, you might like this BlueMazda6 in Tampa . However, it doesn’t have a sunroof :(

Not the worst car to start with by any means. But seriously, I get it will be parked in front of your parents car but theft is certainly a real issue, I wouldn’t downplay the warnings.

I'm not downplaying the warnings because I know completely the risks and am prepared to handle that responsibility. First thing I'd spend money on is security shit, better locks and alarm system and whatever. And then when parked for the night it's gonna have a car cover as well as being parked blocked by my parents. I'm gonna have this thing under surveillance with cameras and shit too, for what it's worth.

why stop there? Place four boots every time you finish driving, build an adjacent garage, hell, hire a sniper rifle to injure -or possibly murder- any looky-loos who enter a 3m perimeter around the car

I do not believe any of those is illegal in Florida

Locks do nothing on a 90s Honda. The way thieves get into them is by peeling back the window and then using the interior door handle/lock switch to open the door.

My best rule for shopping for cheap cars is never expect to spend under 5000$ (CAD). Even if the car itself is less than that, it will need some repairs to be safe and reliable. Even if it is completely turnkey you will hate yourself for not banking some money for a surprise repair, or being willing to be suddenly without a car and shopping for one.

Outside of that, an Integra for that little money seems suspicious to me and I would assume there is a major issue lurking, but the market for them near you may be different. Consider insurance as well but for most young people fuel costs will easily overcome insurance costs, so the Honda is a good pick. Also some of the most fun you can have with the front wheels being driven (rental cars excluded)

Most of those security features will be expensive and likely won’t help. Other than blocking the car in and taking the dizzy cap or spark plug wires  in with you there’s not much you can do that wouldn’t be pointless on a 2000$ car. If the windows are crank you can pull them down with your fingers

Any decent condition Acura Integra will get stolen within a couple of days if not garaged.

Even though, my buddies GS-R got stolen in his garage, they even moved another car out of the way to get to it. They were professional, no damage taking the Integra, kinda impressive actually.

Unless you can garage it, I say no.  Otherwise, I would buy it myself if I lived in your area.

Not far, only to school and eventually work. It shouldn’t be a problem at all, I know thousands of people who DD their riced ‘90s Civics all the time with no problem at all. A few even wrecked but made it out just fine, their cars were either salvageable or totaled but they always came  out fine. I don't drive like an idiot and I'm mindful of my surroundings so I should be mostly fine, though there are unavoidable situations but at least I'd be able to lighten the impact by moving as much as possible, worst case scenario.

They're power windows so I don't know. Plus like I said it's a damn good neighborhood and I have a neighbor who parks 2 AE86s and an NA Miata in his driveway with nothing more than a car cover and maybe a cat blocking it in and he's been just fine for the 8 years he's lived here.

It’s the ideal car to learn on, plenty of aftermarket, no super slow, not fast, good on gas. The only concern is crash safety, Hondas  from that era crumple like tin cans

I know multiple people with ‘90s crapcan ricer Civics that have been in some big accidents, but they've walked away from them mostly fine, minus being sore. This is even when the cars looks completely obliterated, and they still end up fine. But I'll at least try to be as careful as possible when driving, I am nothing like all these other idiot teen drivers in the world, always on their phone and crap.

Perfect car for a 16 year old. Here’s your security solution:

https://www.amazon.com/WATERWICH-Battery-isolator-Disconnect-Terminals/dp/B07RSXR1D4/ref=asc_df_B07RSXR1D4/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=362794770459&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=923148336250620149&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9033604&hvtargid=pla-783405872399&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=74430839645&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=362794770459&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=923148336250620149&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9033604&hvtargid=pla-783405872399

Mount this switch under the seat. Run large gauge wiring from starter to switch and back, or something to that effect. The key is removable. Impossible (unless they pop the hood and jump the starter) to start the car without the key for the switch. Another option is putting this inline on a main battery wire (hide it so it isn’t obvious what’s going on) . Your radio presets and clock  would would lose their memory, but they wouldn't be able to start the car.

My first street legal car was a 95 civic Dx sedan, One time going around a sweeping turn a water bottle that I was drinking from got pinched between my face and the headliner as the chassis flexed. Also the floor boards would pop up or down like a safety seal that you find on lids.

The most ideal car is probably an early 90's late 80's Volvo, safer then anything in the price range, fun to drive(if you find a manual), less likely to be stolen, good handling

Hey, a car I have experience in versus making shit up.

First question: DO YOU HAVE OFF-STREET PARKING? Do not under any circumstances leave this car street parked for any length of time. Mine ended up across the bay with its engine, hood, and wheels missing. At least get yourself a few kill switches.

These are fantastic little cars to drive, but you will feel very vulnerable in them. At stock height you are below the belt line of the average CamCordCivicRolla. I felt vulnerable going toe-to-toe with the average SUV. They are surprisingly safe though: my mom’s LS was t-boned by a F150 at 25 mph and we survived without long term injuries, though that was by sheer stroke of luck.

Now that I got all the boring BS out of the way, here’s the fun part: parts are stupid cheap and they are pretty easy to work on. A 10mm and a service manual are the very least you’ll need. Honda-Tech is still active enough that you can find some useful build/DIY threads . Rear fender rust kills these cars fast so check that out.

One last word of warning: These Honda shifters are seriously good and few cars will live up to it. You will find yourself comparing every manual shifter to the Integra even years after you’ve stopped driving it. G et yourself onto a curvy road, lower the windows & the sunroof, and run it up the gears for some inexpensive fun.

Id go for a hidden Starter kill if I were you. My 9 7 accord I had years ago was stolen.  when recovered there was no damage to anything ( amazingly) even to the ignition switch. I think there are only so many ignition keys so th ey just found one that fit.
